POSITION INFORMATION The Sheriff's Office is recruiting for a Supervising Sheriff's Automotive Technician. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and overseeing the outfitting, installation, repair, and maintenance of department vehicles and specialized equipment. This role ensures that vehicles are properly equipped, maintained, and operating reliably to support public safety operations. The position coordinates technical activities, supervises assigned work, and performs a variety of specialized technical duties related to the assigned area of responsibility. Strong leadership, organizational, and technical skills are essential for success in this role.

Human Resources website.DEFINITIONTo plan, organize, direct, and supervise the installation, repair, and maintenance of emergency equipment on vehicles and equipment assigned to the Sheriff’s Office; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThe Supervisor level recognizes positions that perform full, first-line supervisory responsibilities including planning, assigning, and evaluating the work of subordinates and are responsible for a program area within a work unit or department.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives general direction from a Sheriff’s Lieutenant.
Exercises direct supervision over technical personnel.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIESDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Recommend and assist in the implementation of unit goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for the upfitting of emergency vehicles and equipment assigned to the Sheriff’s Office; implement policies and procedures.
- Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of staff involved in the installation, repair, and maintenance of specialized Sheriff’s Office equipment, including, but not limited to, light bars, flashers, sirens, weapons storage, consoles, transport partitions, radios, speakers, and antennas, to modify vehicles to meet Sheriff’s Office specifications.
- Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities; coordinate and monitor workflow of an assigned work unit; recommend and implement improvements and modifications to assigned work unit.
- Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations; submit justifications for equipment, fuel, supplies, and personnel; monitor and control expenditures.
- Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations; recommend discipline; implement discipline procedures as directed to maintain the efficient and professional operation of assigned work unit.
- Schedule vehicle and equipment service and repair activities, both internally and with outside vendors.
- Forecast vehicle replacements and associated costs; provide input on standards and specifications; coordinate with vendors and process change orders; accept deliveries and perform inspections.
- Initiate and track work orders; prepare records of work performed; generate and review reports from an automated maintenance management system for assigned work unit.
- Maintain communication with Command staff regarding the status of vehicles and equipment, personnel needs, and operational matters impacting upfitting activities.
- Oversee the work of staff performing routine maintenance and repair of vehicles.
- Oversee and maintain Sheriff’s Office fuel network.
- Participate in the work of staff as it relates to routine maintenance and repair of vehicles and the upfitting of vehicles and equipment.
- As directed, may represent the division to outside agencies, organizations, and vendors; provide technical assistance as necessary.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, other County employees, supply vendors, and the public using principles of effective customer service.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSIt is the responsibility of applicants to identify in their application materials how they meet the minimum qualifications listed below. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience performing duties similar to a Sheriff’s Automotive Technician II with Placer County.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Required License or Certificate: - May need to possess a valid driver’s license as required by the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.

- On a continuous basis, sit at desk when reviewing manuals, schematics, and specifications or while in meetings for long periods of time; walk, stand, bend, squat, crouch, stoop, climb, kneel, reach, balance, feel, and twist when performing installation and repair of equipment; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; speak, use telephone, write, and use keyboard to communicate; see and hear with sufficient acuity to evaluate proper functioning of various vehicles and equipment; visually differentiate between colors on wires; regularly lift very heavy weight.
- Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine proper course of action.
- Organize, implement, and direct emergency vehicle and equipment upfitting within the Sheriff’s Office.
- Supervise, train, assign, review, and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
- Develop and recommend policies and procedures related to assigned operations.
- Maintain records and prepare reports.
- Use modern office equipment and technology, including computers and applicable software.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
SELECTION PROCEDURE Training & Experience Rating (100%) Based upon responses to the supplemental questionnaire, the applicant’s education, training, and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENTPrior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination (which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation), sign a constitutional oath, and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S. For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation (which may include a credit check, voice stress analysis, and/or a polygraph), and/or be bonded. Additionally, positions in law enforcement classifications and those supporting law enforcement functions will be required to complete a conviction history questionnaire prior to or during the interview process.
