About the Opportunity

The City of Ventura is seeking a customer-focused and detail-oriented Building Inspector to join our Community Development Department. In this role, you will help ensure the safety, quality, and compliance of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects throughout the community. Under general supervision, you will perform inspections at various stages of construction, remodeling, and repair to verify compliance with applicable building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, energy, accessibility, and housing codes.

Building Inspectors play a vital role in supporting safe development by interpreting codes and regulations, providing technical guidance to contractors, architects, property owners, and the public, and helping applicants navigate the permitting and inspection process.

Key responsibilities include:


Minimum Qualifications - Required

A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of high school and three years of experience in the building construction or inspection fields, providing knowledge of carpentry, electrical installations, plumbing, and other related building trades are required.

In addition, Senior Building Inspector requires 18 months of experience equivalent to that of a Building Inspector with the City of Ventura, or three years of journey-level building inspection experience.

License

Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.

Certificates:

Building Inspector: must obtain a Building Inspector Certificate, from the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or International Code Council (ICC), within one year of appointment.

Senior Building Inspector: must possess a Building Inspector Certificate at time of appointment AND obtain a Combination Residential Inspector Certificate, or separate building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical certificates, from the ICBO or ICC, within one year of appointment.

The Community Development Department is responsible for guiding the City’s growth in a way that is safe, sustainable, and responsive to community needs. The department oversees planning and zoning, permit services, building and safety, code enforcement, housing, and redevelopment activities. Through these functions, Community Development ensures that new development and improvements to existing properties comply with City policies, zoning regulations, and building and safety standards.

Working collaboratively across divisions and with City leadership, commissions, and the public, the department supports economic vitality, protects neighborhood quality, advances affordable housing initiatives, and promotes long-term planning goals. Community Development plays a key role in shaping the built environment while balancing regulatory requirements, public safety, and community values.
