The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe, well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II to join its Facilities Maintenance & Development / Graffiti Abatement / Fencing Team.

The potential candidate will play a key role in the following duties:

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
This individual will perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on playground equipment, skate parks, exercise equipment, soccer goals, basketball courts, tennis nets, and supports. Perform preventive maintenance on playground and exercise equipment as needed. Operate hand and power tools. Report unsafe conditions and equipment by filling out work orders for routine and preventative maintenance. Must drive to and from work site. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays if needed. Report unsafe conditions and unsafe equipment. Abate graffiti safely using chemicals. Perform other duties as assigned.

This position is designated among essential personnel under the City of Houston's Emergency Management Policy.

WORKING CONDITIONS
There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Specialized training in principles, procedures, practices, routines, or techniques in a specific area or trade, which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six (6) months of experience in building or mechanical maintenance is required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Texas State-issued Driver’s License (TDL) and must comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

PREFERENCES

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
