ABOUT THE POSITION

The Clark County Parks & Recreation Department is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Public Art Conservator position. As a member of the our team you will play a vital role in preserving, maintaining, and enhancing our city’s diverse collection of public artworks. This position offers the opportunity to collaborate with artists, community stakeholders and internal departments to ensure the long-term care and integrity of art in public spaces. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the preservation, assessment and treatment of public artworks; developing and implementing maintenance plans; responding to emergencies or damages; collaborating with artists, stakeholders, partner agencies and ensuring that all conservation practices meet the highest professional and ethical standards.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience: Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Art Conservation, Fine Arts, Material Science, or a related field. Professional level experience in art conservation or restoration may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to two (2) years.

All qualifying education and each experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application. Working Conditions: Attend meetings or public art functions outside of normal working hours. May work outdoors in hazardous conditions.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Please note, Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsorships or transfers for any employment positions.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

• Develops and implements conservation strategies for the assessment, preservation, and restoration of public artworks.
• Collaborates with county officials, artists, and community stakeholders regarding the care and maintenance of public art installations.
• Documents the condition of artworks, creating detailed reports and treatment records that outline conservation methods and outcomes.
• Conducts regular inspections of public art for signs of deterioration, environmental damage, or vandalism, and takes appropriate action as necessary.
• Recommends and carries out necessary repair or conservation procedures, following best practices in the field.
• Maintains accurate records of conservation treatments, materials used, and any changes made to artworks over time.
• Utilizes knowledge of materials science to inform conservation techniques and practices, ensuring minimal impact on the artwork's integrity.
• Assists in organizing public programs to educate the community about the importance of art conservation and preservation efforts.
• Works collaboratively as part of a team to enhance the visibility and efficacy of public art initiatives and conservation activities.
• Uses computer software to maintain databases and generate reports related to the condition and treatments of artworks.
• May drive a personal or County motor vehicle in the course of the work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mobility to work in various outdoor and public settings, ability to lift and maneuver artworks weighing up to 50 pounds, vision to read printed materials, capability to assess conditions visually, and effective communication abilities for interacting with the public and stakeholders.
