Job Summary

The Real-Time Captioner (may be referred to as CART/Communication Access Realtime Translation Provider) facilitates the communication and integration of Deaf, hearing impaired, and students with other disabilities (i.e., psychological /learning disabilities) including faculty, staff and university guests into the classroom, other instructional settings, and the university community. Real-time captioning/CART facilitates communication by converting the spoken word into instant text by using court-reporting methods, a laptop computer and/or a steno machine.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Must be able to type at a minimum rate of 200 wpm. Must possess a high level of attention to detail and accuracy; have excellent listening/comprehension skills, a solid grasp of English grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. Must possess knowledge of Realtime software, technology, computer systems and equipment and the ability to generate an instant transcript. Must be able to adjust to a wide spectrum of needs and possess a high degree of linguistic, cognitive, and technical skill. Must possess a general knowledge of Deaf culture. Must stay current with technical terminology and software. Must have the ability to accept an assignment with regard to skill level, topic familiarity, setting, and consumer awareness. Must work effectively with consumers. Must adhere to industry-recognized Professional Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice and Confidentiality. Must have oral communication skills to communicate diplomatically and effectively with co-workers, staff, and department staff. Must be able to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others. Must be able to work effectively and productively as part of a team. Must be able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Must be able to consistently report to work on time, prepared to perform the duties of the position. Must have knowledge of standard work practices. Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion including evidence of equity mindedness in previous experience. Experience with utilizing an equity lens in employment practices and respectful interactions with others.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a court reporting school and a minimum of six months experience providing real-time captioning services required, preferably in a higher education setting. Realtime Captioners/CART must complete a Court Reporting Training Program.

Compensation

The salary range for this classification is $19.37 - $194.60 per hour.

Time Base

Hourly/intermittent on call temporary position for up to one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
