County of Los Angeles Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant II vacancies related to the homelessness crisis.
Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.
Before the end of your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant II .DEFINITION:Under general supervision, performs professional fire protection engineering work involving review and approval of complex construction plans, and inspection of building sites for compliance with fire protection codes and regulations.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:Positions allocable to this class are located in the Prevention Bureau of the Fire Department. Positions work under the administrative and technical supervision of a supervisory level fire prevention engineer. Incumbents are engaged in the performance of all fire protection engineering assignments. They are responsible for professional fire protection engineering work involving plan checks of technically complex structures, and review of fire flow and hydrant requirements for the purpose of safeguarding life and property against loss from fire, panic, and related hazards. Incumbents provide technical supervision to Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant I's. Incumbents in this class must possess thorough knowledge and understanding of engineering principles; acquired through academic training or related work experience, and thorough knowledge of fire codes and regulations; and fire hazardous materials. Incumbents must also exercise knowledge of the interpretation of legal land maps and parcels, and knowledge of mathematics sufficient to perform related engineering calculations.
Essential Job Functions- Conducts plan checks of complex building plans such as A, B, E, F, H, I, R, and S occupancies and specialty projects such as high rises, high-pile combustible storage, and hazardous materials as they pertain to fire flow, hydrant location, and access requirements.
- Reviews construction plans; identifies discrepancies in plans with building and fire codes; provides recommendations for resolving discrepancies; conveys such information to project applicant; generates plan requirements using electronic permit database system; reviews plan resubmittals for compliance.
- Determines access and needed fire flow and hydrant requirements during the entitlement process.
- Provides technical supervision to lower level fire prevention engineering staff including consultation and training on preliminary plan checks.
- Performs calculations to determine building area justification and fire flow requirements; conducts field inspections to verify hydrant locations; calculate hydrant flow; performs calculations for on-site fire protection systems such as residential and commercial automatic sprinkler systems or other special extinguishment systems; performs hydraulic calculations for trees, loops and complex grids.
- Evaluates requests for alternatives to applicable fire codes and ordinances, and provides analyses and recommendations to fire prevention management. Acts as liaison between the Fire Department and other county, city, and public agencies by attending meetings providing information pertaining to fire protection requirements and assigned projects.
- Carries heavy equipment over rough terrain in the performance of inspections as needed.
RequirementsMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:Option I: A Certificate of Registration as a Fire Protection Engineer;
Option II: Graduation from an accredited* college or university** with specialization in civil engineering, fire protection engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architecture, fire protection administration or fire technology related field - AND - One year's experience performing fire protection engineering work;
Option III: Five years experience performing fire protection engineering work;
Option IV: Two years experience at the level of Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant I***.
*Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national, or international accrediting agencies which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or the Association of International Credential Evaluations, Inc. (AICE).

LICENSE:A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS:3 - Moderate - Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
