Engineer II/III.
The
Engineer II/III performs a variety of engineering duties, including acting as a project engineer by preparing designs, plans, specifications, and cost estimates, and administering and processing contract documents for design, construction, and maintenance of various engineering projects.
Engineer II is the experienced level in this classification series. Incumbents are expected to perform a variety of engineering assignments with minimal review and supervision and are expected to exercise broader scope of responsibilities and professional judgment in completion of assignments than incumbents at the Engineer I level.
Engineer III is the advanced-experienced level in this classification series. Incumbents handle the more complex engineering assignments with minimal review and supervision and are permitted to exercise greater independent professional judgment in the performance of job duties and responsibilities than incumbents at the Engineer II level. In addition, Engineer III incumbents may act in a lead capacity.
Incumbents in the Engineer classification series are assigned to various programs including:
Construction, Design, Development Services, Road Maintenance & Operations, or Resources.
The vacancies to be filled with this recruitment currently exist in the following areas: - Design - Roads and Bridge Sections
- Resources (Water/Wastewater Systems) - Special Districts Administration
Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

Engineer II Engineer III Minimum Qualifications
ENGINEER II OPTION 1 : Education : Possession of a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.
Experience : One (1) year of full-time, paid professional engineering experience which included one of the following:
- the use of Civil 3D and AutoCAD Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to design roads, bridges, or other civil engineering projects; OR
- the design, construction, commissioning, or operation of water and/or wastewater systems and preparation of reports to calculate financial rates for these systems.
OPTION 2 : Registration : Valid certification as an Engineer-in-Training by the State of California, Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
Experience : One (1) year of full-time, paid engineering experience which included one of the following:
- the use of Civil 3D and AutoCAD Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to design roads, bridges, or other civil engineering projects; OR
- the design, construction, commissioning, or operation of water and/or wastewater systems and preparation of reports to calculate financial rates for these systems.
The following information is in addition to the options listed above: License : Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent, may be required.

- Certify Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived, and the names will be certified without an examination.
Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to 12 months from the date of establishment) and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
