Job Summary

Mohave County Animal Shelter is currently recruiting for an Animal Shelter Lead in the Kingman, AZ location.
Depending on qualification, may fill position as:
Animal Shelter Technician Range 7, Steps 1-19: $15.29 - $26.03

Provides leadership and guidance to the Animal Shelter Technicians in the performance of their duties. Assists Animal Shelter Supervisor with needed tasks. Supports the Animal Shelter Manager in ensuring quality care for shelter animals. Provides quality service to internal and external customers.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Will provide direction and functional supervision to Animal Shelter Technicians.

Essential Job Functions

• Directs, guides, and coaches Animal Shelter Technicians in the performance of their duties.
• Enforces the proper chain of command with employee issues and leads Animal Shelter Technicians in resolving animal or staff issues.
• Ensures daily vet visits for medical treatment for all shelter animals.
• Provides and leads Animal Shelter Technicians in proper post-veterinary care for all shelter animals and follows up with veterinary office on any prolonged illness/treatment.
• Leads and maintains current shelter animal evaluations.
• Leads staff in behavior assessments, testing, and animal pairing for all shelter animals.
• Prepares surgery lists for Front Office staff.
• Assists Animal Shelter Supervisor in identifying animals needing medical intervention.
• Implants microchips.
• Vaccinates as indicated and necessary.
• Triages emergency cases and takes appropriate action with required urgency.
• Ensures Animal Shelter Technician chore charts are complete and signed off daily.
• Performs euthanasia and assists staff in humane euthanasia techniques.
• Maintains proper sanitation of kennels, cages, floors, and equipment.
• Helps identify animals that come to shelter already surgically sterilized (pre-alters).
• Provides courteous, high-quality service to members of the public.
• Provides adopter support to include post op. care instructions, administration of meds, and needed follow up care.
• Maintains records and files.
• Assists with evaluation of program operations and provides needs assessment.
• Stores and maintains inventory of medical supplies.
• Meets with the public and conducts tours.
• Monitors safety practices and ensures safety procedures are in place and observed in accordance with Federal, State, and County regulations or policies.
• Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.

SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs related work as required.
• Performs special assignments as requested.
• Exercises regular and predictable attendance and punctuality in accordance with Mohave County Personnel Policies and Procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Two (2) years’ experience working with animals in a veterinary hospital, humane society, or other animal facility; may include volunteer work.
• OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.

SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENT

• Must pass drug screen post offer.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license for operation of motor vehicles on Arizona roads at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed in this position.
• Provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County.

• Advanced animal care, handling methods, and control practices.
• Record keeping practices, customer service, and standards and protocols.
• Regional animal care resources are available to citizens.
• Shelter cleaning and sanitation methods and techniques.
• How to dispense medication to animals and assist with vaccinations.
• Disease symptoms in domestic animals.
• Extensive knowledge of animal breeds and ages.
• Physical and behavioral characteristics of common breeds of dogs and cats.
• County customer service objectives and strategies.

Skill in:

• Recognizing symptoms of animal diseases.
• Exercising patience, care, and compassion in dealing with animals.
• Strong written and verbal communication.
• Comprehending and following written instructions and prioritizing tasks.

Ability to:

• Train and lead Animal Care Technicians.
• Balance, climb, crawl, crouch, feel, finger, grasp, handle, reach, kneel, lift, push, pull, stand, stoop, walk, perform repetitive motion, operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment, hear, speak, and demonstrate mental and visual acuity.
• De-escalate conflict and maintain a calm demeanor in situations that require a high degree of sensitivity and tact.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Interact with the public with a focus on courteous customer service.
• Follow instructions and directions.
• Maintain reports, records, logs, and filing systems.
• Enter data into a computer system.
• Identify normal and abnormal animal behavior and symptoms of rabies and other animal disorders.
• Care, feed and safely handle animals to avoid injury to persons/animals.
• Properly store and maintain inventory of medical supplies, including narcotics.
