We are seeking a reliable and dedicated Library Custodian/Delivery Driver to ensure our libraries are clean, safe, and welcoming for public use. In this role, you will directly support our mission and vision by performing routine custodial and maintenance tasks, drive a delivery vehicle to transport library materials between locations, and maintain a clean, sanitized, and welcoming environment. You’ll also play a vital role in creating a safe space for staff and patrons, treating individuals experiencing crisis with care and dignity. As part of our mission, we equip our team members with the tools to support trauma-informed care and crisis prevention, ensuring our libraries are safe and accessible for everyone.

• Custodial Duties
• Clean, sanitize, and maintain library spaces, including floors, carpets, windows, walls, furniture, and fixtures.
• Ensure restrooms are clean and sanitized, restock and monitor restroom supplies.
• Empty trash and handle potentially infectious materials, including human waste and drug paraphernalia, with proper safety protocols.
• Perform light maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, painting, and repairing minor issues.
• Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of library grounds, including trash pickup, sanitary disposal of human waste and drug paraphernalia, and basic landscaping.
• Delivery Driver Duties
• Drive library vehicles to transport materials between branches, adhering to delivery schedules and WA state driving laws.
• Load and unload materials, ensuring safe and efficient handling of bins, boxes, and other items weighing up to 75 lbs. on a regular basis.
• Collect and record library branch bank deposits.
• Safety and Support
• Ensure spaces are secure by checking doors, alarms, and meeting rooms.
• Treat patrons and individuals in crisis with care and respect, using trauma-informed approaches.
• Observe and report maintenance or safety concerns.
• Team Collaboration
  • Assist with meeting room setups by moving furniture and supplies as needed.
  • Monitor and communicate supply needs for cleaning and restocking purposes.

The work schedule is Monday - Friday, 6 am - 2:30 pm with a rotating Tuesday - Saturday schedule approximately every 4 weeks

Qualifications

• A minimum of one year's experience satisfactorily performing custodial work, housekeeping, delivery driving or similar work which provided the knowledge and skills required for this position. Instruction in manual or vocational work related to custodial or housekeeping work may be substituted on a month for month basis for experience.

LICENSING, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• A Washington State driver's license, or the ability to obtain one, and a good driving record with maintenance thereafter.

• Working knowledge of cleaning methods, practices, equipment, and materials, including a wide variety of cleaners, polishes, oils, waxes, etc.
• Working knowledge of safety practices as applied to all aspects of the position
• Working knowledge of the WA state rules of the road

Skills and abilities

• Skill and ability to understand oral and written instructions and to perform duties without close Supervision
• Skill and ability to operate computer equipment and to operate troubleshooting and programming methods related to maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems of library facilities
• Skill and ability to perform repairs/maintenance to buildings, grounds and equipment
• Skill and ability to operate industrial-sized cleaning equipment and other equipment in a safe manner on a regular basis. Examples of equipment include a wide variety of vacuums, such as buffers, polishers, shampooers, Genie lifts, ladders, pallet jacks, etc.
• Skill and ability to work safely around a variety of chemicals used in cleaning materials

This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the Tacoma Public Library and Local 120. Individuals given a conditional offer of employment must also pass a background check. New employees must successfully complete a six-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.

Paid leave: Library Employees are entitled to receive paid holidays, and Personal Time Off (PTO).

Retirement: All employees of the Library except part-time Pages, temporary employees, and certain project employees, are included in the City of Tacoma Employees' Retirement System. All members of the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System are also covered by Social Security.

The Tacoma Public Library is not a department of the City of Tacoma and the Library's employees are not employees of the City. The Library is a separate entity with its own governing body. The Library's governing body is the Tacoma Public Library Board of Trustees.

Employees of the City of Tacoma who accept employment with the Tacoma Public Library will lose their City of Tacoma employee seniority. They will also find that their leave accruals, and some of the benefits enjoyed as employees of the City of Tacoma do not carry over when they are hired for a position with the Tacoma Public Library.
