The PositionBargaining Unit: Local 1 - Building Trades UnitThe Contra Costa County Public Works Department is currently recruiting to fill multiple Carpenter positions in the Public Works Facilities Maintenance Division. All interested and qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.
Under general supervision, Carpenters perform rough and finished carpentry work (tenant improvement projects, general maintenance, roof repairs, job estimates, after hours emergency response), and related work as required.
The Contra County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 650 miles of roads, 79 miles of streams and channels, and over 150 County buildings. CCCPWD services include parks and recreation, sandbag distribution, flood control, road and facilities maintenance, and storm water management. CCCPWD operates two airports, Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, and Byron Airport in Byron. CCCPWD strives for continuous improvement to deliver cost effective, safe reliable and sustainable projects, programs, and quality services.

What you will typically be responsible for:• Following established safety rules and regulations and maintaining a safe and clean environment
• Studying specification in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required
• Measuring and marking cutting lines on materials, using a ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge
• Shaping or cutting materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws
• Installing structures or fixtures, such as windows, frames, floorings, trim, or hardware, using carpenters’ hand or power tools. Inspecting ceiling or flooring, wall coverings, siding, glass, or woodwork to detect broken or damaged structures
• Maintaining emails, records, document actions, and presenting written progress reports
• Anchoring and bracing forms and other structures in place, using nails, bolts, anchor rods, steel cables, planks, wedges, and timbers
• Creating and submitting project estimates
• Completing work requests thoroughly and professionally, includes project notes and labor charges on all work requests; responding to work requests in a timely and efficient manner

A few challenges you might face in this job:• You may perform carpentry work in a Detention Facility around inmates, hospital or medical setting around patients, and psychiatric care facilities (note: this will require Detention clearance)
• There may be instances where you will have to work nights and or weekends to meet customer needs
• There will be instances when you must perform carpentry work alone
• Responding to after hour emergency call-outs
• Obtaining Detention clearance
Desirable Qualifications:• Knowledge of door and hardware installation/repair
• Knowledge in fabricating and installing cabinets and countertops
• Knowledge of American Disabilities Act Codes
• Knowledge of California Building Codes
• Intermediate to advance knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word

The eligible list established from this recruitment may remain in effect for six months.
Minimum QualificationsLicense: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator License. Out of state Motor Vehicle Operator's License will be accepted during the application process.
Applicants must be able to obtain the Detention Facility Clearance to work in the detention facilities.
Experience:
Completion of a four (4) year Carpenter Apprenticeship AND one (1) year of full time, or its equivalent, experience performing rough and finished carpentry work at the journey level;
OR
Five (5) years of full time, or its equivalent, experience performing rough and finished carpentry work AND one (1) year of carpentry work at the journey level.
Selection Process1.
Application filing and evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.

Multiple Choice Examination: A multiple choice examination will be conducted to measures candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. These may include but are not limited to: professional and technical expertise, mathematical facility, reading comprehension and delivering results. (Weight 25%)
3.
Performance Examination: A performance examination will be conducted to measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. These may include but are not limited to: professional and technical expertise, mathematical facility, reading comprehension, delivering results, design sense, safety focus, manual dexterity, self-management, attention to detail, and informing. (Weighted 75%)
4.
Departmental Hiring Interviews: To be scheduled once the eligible list is established.
The Multiple Choice Exam is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) March 2025.
The Performance Exam is tentatively scheduled to take place on April 2 and/or April 3, 2025.
The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
