Position InformationThe Brentwood City Attorney seeks two (2) Assistant City Attorneys who bring exceptional experience as a municipal attorney with demonstrated expertise in municipal law. Brentwood is located approximately 60 miles east of San Francisco in Eastern Contra Costa County, with a population of roughly 65,000 residents. Many important projects have been completed and are planned in the near future, including the development of the Innovation Center at Brentwood along Highway 4, with a new Costco currently breaking ground there. In addition, there is the planned development of the Sand Creek Sports Complex, a 14.5 acre multi-sport facility, a $90 million solid waste organics diversion facility and the creation of new retail and employment centers. This recruitment seeks to add two Assistant City Attorneys, one of whom will fill the Assistant City Attorney position recently vacated by the current City Attorney, and one of whom will occupy a new Assistant City Attorney position in the office. The Office culture is collegial, with an intentional focus on carrying out responsibilities with a team-oriented approach. To this end, we seek candidates who function best in a collaborative environment. Office responsibilities include the review and preparation of ordinances, resolutions, staff reports, contracts, leases, and related legal documents for the City. In addition, the office represents the City and its officers and employees in limited litigation and contracts with outside counsel for more complex matters.
The ideal candidates will be experienced, self-motivated, and ethical attorneys with a proven record of providing competent and practical legal advice on a range of municipal law topics. Candidates who bring experience in land use, real property, and/or knowledge of personnel law will be favorably considered. The successful candidates will: be team players who works closely with Department heads and City staff in examining potential legal impacts on a wide range of policy and operational issues; maintain the highest ethical standards; be effective leaders who understand how to minimize the City’s exposure to liability while achieving the City Council’s policy direction; be politically astute without being political; be approachable and accessible, with a customer-service orientation; be confident, yet unassuming, with a pragmatic/common sense approach and a sense of humor.
The annual salary range for each of these positions is currently
$173,671 to $211,098. Placement within this range is dependent upon qualifications. The City is in the midst of negotiations and this information may be subject to change.
