BUILDING INSPECTOR

Department: Inspection Services

Pay Grade: 111

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Personnel Status: Regular Full-Time

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the enforcement of applicable building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, gas, accessibility and other relevant codes on new construction and remodels. This position reports to the Chief Building Inspector.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs and assist with complex building and site inspections to ensure that all work complies with applicable laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
• Maintains and updates inspection records, project documentation, and project files; updates building permit and inspection tracking database.
• Maintains effective and collaborative working relationships with inspectors, city staff, contractors, and the public.
• Assists contractors and design professionals with questions or inquiries concerning the application, interpretation and intent of codes, related procedures and how to achieve code compliance.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; one (1) to three (3) years’ experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain International Code Council certification for the type of inspections conducted within one year of employment.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain two additional approved International Code Council certifications within 2 years of employment.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of City and departmental rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of relevant state and adopted building codes.
• Knowledge of City ordinances.
• Knowledge of construction techniques and contracting procedures.
• Knowledge of types, grades, and sizes of building materials.
• Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
• Skill in reviewing and interpreting plans, technical specifications, and blueprints.
• Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
• Skill in the use of small office equipment, including calculators, copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
• Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
• Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
• Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
• Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is light work, which requires exerting up to 24 pounds of force occasionally. Work is typically performed while sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguishes between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed in both an office environment and at construction sites during inspections. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
