This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks, and will be located at Thousand Hills State Park, 20431 State Highway 157, Kirksville, MO. This position typically works 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday, during the off-season (November 1st through March 31st) and Wednesday through Sunday, during the on-season (April 1st through October 31st). During the on-season, April through October, this position will be required to work at least two weekends per month, which includes Saturday and Sunday. Shifts may vary occasionally with the time of year and to meet the needs of the facility. This position will require working regularly rotating weekends, and working nights, holidays, and special events as necessary. (On-site Housing is available.)

Applicants eligible for transfer or promotion within Missouri State Parks may receive additional salary consideration.

• This position is responsible for the administrative and supervisory oversight of Thousand Hills State Park; including oversight of daily operations, trails, campground, day use areas, park office, budgeting, directing maintenance priorities, meeting operational standards, staff work schedules, and direct supervision.
• Must be able to exercise a high degree of initiative and independent judgement in planning and implementing the work.
• Supervise permanent, seasonal, temporary, and volunteer employees at Thousand Hills State Park in the protection, maintenance, operation, and repair of state parks/historic sites, natural and cultural resources, facilities, equipment, and systems. Skill in managing and collaborating with staff.
• Greets the public and discusses the facility’s resources, rules, and regulations relating to the state park and state historic site system.
• Develop, schedule, and participate in special events, interpretive programs, and informational public meetings.
• Direct and participate in natural resource management activities at Thousand Hills State Park. Includes, but is not limited to preparing burn plans, conducting prescribed burns, and exotic species control.
• Establish a functional, proactive, working relationship with the media, local governments, local constituency groups and other stake holders.
• Research, collect, organizes, draft data for fiscal, statistical, and operational reports.
• Assists in implementing state park or historic site development projects, which include expansions, new construction, renovations, and maintenance.
• Respond to medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, personal injuries, disturbances, natural disasters, and any other significant events within the park.
• Position must be available to work on weekends, holidays, and evenings, in order to respond to incidents and to visitors’ needs at the park (which is open year-round).

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university can include: Park Management, Parks and Recreation, Wildlife Management, Forestry, Botany, Biology, Natural Sciences, Business of Public Administration or related field.
• AND five or more years of management, supervision and participation in interpretation, preservation, protection, maintenance and enhancement of state parks and historic sites .

Substitutions for additional education or experience may be allowed .

Lack of post-secondary education will not be used as the sole basis denying consideration to any applicant.

Other Preferred Qualifications and Experience/Special Job Requirements:

• Required to work at least two weekends per month during the “On-Season” which is April 1 - October 31.
• Must be able to work well with little direct supervision.
• Must be able to work with outside agencies and landowners regarding issues related to State Parks.
• Must be able to speak and give presentations at public meetings and events.
• Ability to operate a vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.
• Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, evenings, and split shifts.
• Available to participate in special events, meetings, workshops and seminars requiring overnight stays.
• Ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain in all kinds of weather and environmental conditions and have the ability to lift 25 pounds.
• Candidate will be required to successfully complete both the Division of State Parks Basic Fire Training and Federal S-130/190 courses within one year (The Fire Operations Coordinator may approve substitute trainings.)
• Proficient with current technology and ability to use computer programs to manage and present reports, proposals and professional communications with both team members and the public.
• Training, certification, and/or education in continuous process improvement programs such as Lean Six Sigma as well as completion of Missouri Way, Leadership Academy, and similar programs is preferred.
