Overview

We are looking for a Solid Waste Assistant Director!

We’re seeking a confident leader with industry experience and a strong foundation in solid waste operations and regulatory compliance. As the Assistant Solid Waste Director, you’ll help lead daily operations and guide long-term planning for landfill disposal, recycling, household hazardous waste collection, transfer stations, and future diversion programs to support the Solid Waste Infrastructure Master Plan. This role combines technical expertise with strategic leadership to deliver efficient, sustainable solutions for our community. Responsibilities

What you'll be doing:

• Supervising and supporting staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management
  
• Acting as Solid Waste Director in their absence and collaborating on strategic planning and policy development
  
• Overseeing daily operations, including logistics, maintenance, and regulatory compliance
  
• Managing key projects and initiatives from planning through completion.
  
• Overseeing monitoring of environmental controls, leachate collection system, groundwater monitoring, methane gas, and stormwater management.
  
• Assisting with budget development and managing expenditures and contracts
  
• Representing the department in meetings, responding to public inquiries, and resolving operational issues
  
• Interpreting and enforcing federal, state, and local regulations related to solid waste and recycling

What we're looking for:

• Strong leadership and supervisory skills, including staff development, evaluation, and performance management
  
• Solid understanding of solid waste operations, including landfills, transfer stations, recycling, and household hazardous waste management
  
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations related to waste management
  
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines independently
  
• Skilled in conducting research and writing clear, actionable reports and recommendations
  
• Proficient in standard business software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and collaboration tools
  
• Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to build strong working relationships

• Seven (7) years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities required.
  
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in environmental science, civil or environmental engineering, or a closely related field. Related education or experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  
• Possession of a valid license by date of hire required.
