Reports to: Operations Supervisor, Stormwater, Canal, and Drainage

DEFINITION : Under immediate supervision, depending on assignment, learns and performs a variety of manual, semi-skilled and skilled duties associated with the construction, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of the District’s domestic water distribution, wastewater treatment, and collection systems equipment and facilities.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS :

This is an entry-level, trainee classification. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform less difficult and complex tasks in a training capacity involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of District’s operations systems and equipment. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied, complex, and difficult; close supervision and frequent review of work lessen as an incumbent demonstrates skill to perform the work independently. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.

Essential Functions

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
Works from work orders, plat books, blueprints, recording devices, and verbal and written instructions.Places traffic control and warning signs; sets up barricades.Maintains work, time, and material records, logs, and reports.Learns to operate a variety of hand and power tools necessary to perform the duties of the assigned work area.Observes and complies with District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.Learns to construct, install and repair inspection sumps, drain lines, and related facilities on the Stormwater/Drainage system. Provides maintenance, including repair and/or replacing concrete pipe which may include manually leveling pipe bed, operating compaction equipment, breaking down pipe using a sledgehammer, cut-off saw, and/or jack hammer, and hand mixing cement; removes and replaces broken cement lining on channel slopes and other concrete structures.Mixes appropriate quantities of surfactant and herbicide solution for spraying applications and loads mix into spray truck; ensures motor, sprayer wheel and hydraulic gauge are operational; performs weed eradication utilizing on board computer in spray truck, by hand sprayer, and by manually removing weeds using hand tools, as necessary.Assists with installing, repairing, and maintaining chain link fencing, pipe gates, and signage along the Coachella Canal and Whitewater River Stormwater Channels; operates compressor and paint gun to paint signs and protect and maintain appearance on all facilities.Cleans, repairs, inspects, and maintains canal radial gates, slide gates, traveling screens, box screens, flat screens, motors, and actuators; removes debris, paints, and reinstalls as appropriate. Performs maintenance and services on assigned remote location generators to provide temporary power in the event of a power outage; cleans and maintains generator sites including cleaning solar panels, painting, and providing monthly service inspection.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Equivalent to a High School Diploma.

Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.

Experience: Depending on assignment, one (1) year of experience working in the plumbing, construction, or automotive trades.
