Vacation & Sick Leave

At the City of Buckeye, we understand the vital role that vacation time plays in supporting the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of our employees. Vacation and sick leave accruals begin on the first day of employment and may be used upon accrual. Additionally, employees receive credit towards vacation leave accruals for years of service with other public sector retirement systems nationwide (not including Federal service).

Holidays

The City of Buckeye observes eleven holidays per year: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Retirement
This position participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Contribution is mandatory, and the current contribution rate is 12.27%, per fiscal year.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, the Cross Connection Control Specialist is responsible for developing and maintaining thorough backflow prevention and cross-connection control programs. This position includes overseeing backflow device inspections, testing, repairs, new installations, and managing program data. A key part of the role involves investigating customer compliance with state and federal regulations and conducting detailed field tests, inspections, and surveys to spot potential backflow and cross-connection issues.

In this capacity, the Cross Connection Control Specialist plays a crucial role in protecting the integrity and quality of the municipal water supply. Ideal candidates will have substantial experience and knowledge of effective backflow prevention and cross-connection control principles and practices. They must strongly commit to safeguarding vital water resources through diligent monitoring and enforcement. Additionally, this role will focus on program management and data analysis utilizing SAMS Cross Connection software to enhance operational efficiency.

Additional duties include preparing corrective actions and violation notices, generating reports, conducting building plan reviews, performing construction inspections, and maintaining related database information.

Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements

Education and Experience: A high school diploma or GED is required, with additional coursework from a community college or technical institute preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in backflow and cross-connection control program management is required, particularly within water services, public utilities, or a related field. Familiarity with SAMS NJB Cross Connection software or similar asset management systems is preferred, along with a strong understanding of backflow prevention principles, compliance requirements, and industry best practices.

Additional Information

Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Arizona Driver’s License is required. A cross-connection control program specialist certification is preferred or must be obtained within one year of employment.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work is performed in a standard office environment, outdoors in inclement weather, and in public facilities. Requires the ability to lift 50 pounds.
