Position DescriptionEmployees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.
Major/Essential Functions- Assist P.I. in maintaining a supportive and collegial working environment that fosters the exchange of ideas and enhances scientific progress.
- Recording procedures and data in the laboratory notebook.
- Establish and maintain laboratory records
(Expenditures, budget, equipment, manuals and records, animal use records, reagent and experimental protocols, material safety data sheets, databases, biohazardous materials). - Conduct and/or supervise laboratory support activities (ordering supplies, preparing solutions, washing and sterilizing surgical instruments, etc.).
- Assist P.I., postdocs, and students in misc. tasks (Training new students/employees in experimental procedures, library work, preparation of talks, publications and grants).
- Design, execution, and training new students/employees in animal care (safe & humane handling and restraint of animals; substance administration to include intramuscular, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, and intravenous, as well as gavage; collection of blood samples, sedation, anesthesia, and analgesia; methods of euthanasia).
- Maintain animal xenograft experiments and daily animal rounds. To potentially include some weekends.
- Assist P.I., with hiring/ firing/ evaluations of assistants.
- Supports the Service Plus philosophy of Texas Tech.
- Establish and maintain primary cell lines from patient samples; Continue and maintain established cell lines for postdocs, and graduate students.
- Process new primary patient samples to include blood, bone marrow, tumor and fluid models to potentially include some weekends.
Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in one of the sciences, or equivalent combination (four (4) years) of job-related experience and college education. Experience may be substituted for college education on a year for year basis.
