SPECIAL SALARY INFORMATION $36.03 per session.
A session is equivalent to 2 hours.
DEFINITION :Under general supervision, performs firefighting and rescue duties in all types of fires and other emergency situations, on an as needed basis.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS : Positions allocable to this class are temporary and receive training to respond to structure fires, wildland fires, traffic collisions, incident support, medical aids and other all-risk emergencies. Depending on the assignment, positions are supervised by either a Call Fire Fighter Supervisor or Fire Captain. Incumbents have the responsibility to respond to their assigned site or emergency scene on an as needed basis. These positions must respond immediately at any hour of the day or night, in any weather, to combat life or property threatening emergencies.
All positions in this class require the physical stamina to perform such strenuous activities as ascending or descending ladders while carrying victims or equipment in order to effect rescues, as well as the ability to manipulate equipment, such as fire hoses, power tools and hand tools. Incumbents must also be able to receive and follow orders from superiors, under stressful and noisy conditions; and be prepared and able to communicate with other fire fighters through verbal and non-verbal communication cues, such as radios and use of hand signals. Incumbents typically work under hazardous conditions and are exposed to fire, smoke, and other hazardous elements.

- Responds to fire and other emergency incident calls in a defined geographical area of the Los Angeles County Fire Department within a timeframe established by the Department.
- Drives and operates fire apparatus and equipment.
- Reads maps and communicates the location of fires to the appropriate authorities.
- Performs basic firefighting and lifesaving functions, including but not limited to, selecting hose and nozzle depending on the type of fire; creating openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance; and positioning and climbing ladders to gain access to the upper levels of buildings.
- Provides basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as needed.
- Assists in the evaluation of persons endangered by fire or disaster as needed.
Non-emergency response duties include but are not limited to:- Participates in prescribed drills and training activities.
- Participates in educating the public on fire safety.
- Maintains station records.
- Performs assigned duties in maintaining facilities, buildings, quarters, apparatus, equipment, and hydrants.
- Reviews and inspects hazardous conditions within assigned jurisdiction.
