The salary in the Department of Water and Power is $111,540 (flat-rated).

A Sign Painter lays out and paints signs using freehand, stencils, computer, and silk screen methods on a variety of surfaces and materials, applying large vinyl cut graphics and related fabrication.
REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a sign painter;
or Three years of full-time paid experience as a helper to a sign painter.
PROCESS NOTES Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience at the time of filing may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.Applicants filing under Requirement #1 must submit a copy of their apprenticeship certificate. The certificate must be attached to the on-line application BEFORE the application is submitted. If the certificate is attached AFTER the on-line application has been submitted, it will not be available to the City and applicants WILL NOT be credited with having submitted it. Applicants who fail to submit this document at the time of filing by not attaching it to the on-line application WILL NOT be considered further in this examination and their applications will not be processed.Applicants using City of Los Angeles experience filing under Requirement #2 MUST submit a “Verification of Work Experience” (VWE) form, which must also indicate the percentage of time performing the work that is claimed as qualifying experience. Applicants will be disqualified and not eligible for hire if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI.

Applications submitted during the filing period may be kept on file in the event that additional applicants need to be tested to meet hiring needs.
SELECTION PROCESSExamination Weight: Interview: 100%The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, emphasis may be placed on the candidate’s experience, training, and background as they have provided knowledge of: fine lettering, painting, and reflectorization techniques; equipment and materials used in sign painting, such as fillers, reflective sheeting, vinyl, plotters, scanners, printers, table applicators, laminators, and engravers; methods used to prepare various surfaces for reflective sheeting and vinyl installation; techniques used to apply scotchlite, reflective lettering, and vinyl; computer signage and graphic design software; weeding processes; various base surfaces used for sign fabrication; safety practices, including those related to the proper use of chemicals, scaffolds, and ladders; the ability to: lay out a variety of signs on various types of surfaces; understand and follow instructions and drawings; multitask and prioritize work; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Candidates in the examination process may file protests as provided in Sec. 4.20, 4.22, and 4.23 as applicable and within the required time frame; however, the Personnel Department may respond to and resolve protests prior to the establishment of the eligible list.
