Description
The PositionThe County of Contra Costa is seeking a visionary Interim Auditor-Controller to lead the Office of the Auditor-Controller, ensuring fiscal accountability, transparency, and excellence in financial reporting and auditing. As the County’s Chief Accounting Officer, the Auditor-Controller oversees a broad array of statutory and policy-driven responsibilities that support sound financial governance for the County, including managing property tax allocations, payroll, internal audit, systems support, accounts payable, and special accounting. This executive-level leader will ensure fiscal stewardship over a $7 billion budget and serve as a key advisor to the Board of Supervisors, County Administrator, internal departments and regional partners. The ideal candidate for this role will bring strong expertise in public accounting and auditing, as well as an innovative mindset, strong leadership and culture cultivation, and the ability to lead through change. The successful candidate will be appointed by the County Board of Supervisors to serve the remainder of the current term ending on January 4th, 2027. While not a requirement for the role, the County would prefer to appoint a candidate open to running for the Auditor-Controller seat in the 2026 election.

Minimum QualificationsResidency Requirement: Government Code section 24001 and Elections Code section 201 requires that the appointee establish residency and be a registered voter within Contra Costa County at the time of appointment.
To qualify for appointment to the office, a person must also meet at least one of the following criteria:- Possession of a valid and active California CPA License.
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university, college or other four-year institution with a major in accounting, or a business-related degree AND has served within the last five years in a senior fiscal management position in a county, city or other public agency or a non-profit organization, dealing with similar fiscal responsibilities, including, but not limited to, public accounting or auditing responsibilities, for a continuous period of not less than three years.
- Has served as County Auditor, Assistant County Auditor, Chief Deputy County Auditor or an equivalent position for a continuous period of not less than three years.
