Description
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Under general supervision, performs skilled technical work in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic, electromechanical, and electrical equipment. Responsibilities include working with control systems, process instrumentation, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and related equipment. Ensures reliable operation of control and analyzing systems through preventative maintenance, system upgrades, and technical support.
Acceptable Experience and Training
Graduation from high school; and
Two (2) years of technical or trade school specializing in electronics, electrical technology, industrial automation, or related field; and
Two (2) years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electronic, electrical, or automated control systems.
Required Special Qualifications
Possession of a valid State of Iowa driver’s license.
Possession of State of Iowa Grade I Wastewater Operator license within 18 months of appointment for those accepting position at Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority.
Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer background check, physical examination, and drug screen.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
Installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs electrical, electronic, and electro-mechanical devices including meters, transmitters, card readers, microprocessors, sensors, display units, control gates, programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), power supplies and other related equipment.
Troubleshoots and diagnoses issues in control systems using wiring diagrams, schematics, technical manuals, and appropriate testing and diagnostic tools
Analyzes and determines the causes of malfunctions in control devices; repairs or replaces defective component or assembly.
Monitors and evaluates the performance of instrumentation and data acquisition equipment, including transmitters, recorders, telemetry systems, and control boxes.
Maintains pneumatic equipment associated with control systems.
Maintains a network of secondary treatment process control and conveyance system sensors connected to SCADA and collaborates with Operations to actively manage the system and perform all related duties.
Works with equipment manufacturers and representatives to troubleshoot issues with controllers, sensors, or related systems including the repair or replacement of critical components.
Develops and performs preventative maintenance programs for electrical and electronic equipment; prepares technical reports and keeps work and safety records.
Maintains an electronic repair shop and initiates supply action to obtain the appropriate test equipment, repair parts, or replacements.
Maintains appropriate technical manuals, drawings, sketches, and diagrams for electronic equipment.
Provides budget preparation information as it relates to the installation and maintenance of electronic equipment.
Utilizes Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to maintain accurate maintenance records and work order system.
Performs related duties as required.
Wastewater Reclamation Authority Assignment: Collects samples and conducts tests of wastewater and digested solids, performs calculations and logs data according to established procedures.
