CAREER DESCRIPTION

SAFETY SPECIALIST

This position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following date:

Effective June 27, 2025 - 4.00% increase

Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
This recruitment will establish an open eligible list that will be used to fill current and future Safety Specialist positions. The eligible list established may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.

COUNTY EXECUTIVE OFFICE - RISK MANAGEMENT | SAFETY AND LOSS PREVENTION
The County Executive Office - Risk Management (CEO-RM) preserves and protects the human and capital assets of the County of Orange to allow County departments and agencies to meet their missions without unnecessary cost. Each of the seven programs within this office are designed to promote the prudent financial management of funds entrusted to the County of Orange for the provision of its services to the public. THE OPPORTUNITY

The Risk Management Office is seeking an experienced Safety Specialist professional who is self-motivated, proactive, and enthusiastic about promoting and supporting Countywide safety protocols. Safety Specialists are responsible for guiding and supporting the establishment and implementation of worker safety programs, and for participating in County initiatives that promote community goals. This may include supporting the development, coordination, and administration of employee occupational safety and loss prevention programs, and safety training programs as they interface with Countywide Risk Management programs.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Safety and Health Manager, responsibilities and duties for this position include:


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will demonstrate an extensive background in implementing and managing safety and training programs.

Possession of a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification is preferred but not required.

The ideal candidate will also have extensive experience in the following key competencies:

NOTE: Foreign degrees require an evaluation of U.S. equivalency by an agency that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (N.A.C.E.S.).

LICENSE REQUIREMENT
Must have a valid California Class C Driver’s license and a driving record that would enable the candidate to use a County issued vehicle.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Human Resource Services (HRS) will screen all application materials to identify qualified applicants. After the screening, qualified applicants will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the recruitment.

Structured Oral Interview | (Weighted 100%)
Candidates will be interviewed and rated by a qualification appraisal panel of job knowledge experts. Each candidate's rating will be based on responses to a series of structured questions designed to elicit the candidate's qualifications for the job. Only the most successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list.

Eligible List
Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.

Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.
