DEFINITION
Under immediate supervision, depending on assignment, learns and performs a variety of manual, semi-skilled and skilled duties associated with the construction, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of the District’s domestic water distribution, wastewater treatment, and collection systems equipment and facilities; services and repairs water meters, regulating valves, and appurtenances; performs preventative maintenance inspections,; operates and maintains deep well, booster pumps, and pumping facilities; maintains and repairs waterlines and monitors and operates water systems; performs a variety of construction and maintenance duties for the stormwater and drainage system; performs preventative maintenance and repair on canals, meters, gates, screens, generators, and associated District infrastructure and facilities; performs weed eradication and control; delivers irrigation water to agricultural customers; and performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is an entry-level, trainee classification. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform less difficult and complex tasks in a training capacity involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of District’s operations systems and equipment. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied, complex, and difficult; close supervision and frequent review of work lessen as an incumbent demonstrates skill to perform the work independently. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
Works from work orders, plat books, blueprints, recording devices, and verbal and written instructions.Places traffic control and warning signs; sets up barricades.Maintains work, time, and material records, logs, and reports.Learns to operate a variety of hand and power tools necessary to perform the duties of the assigned work area.Observes and complies with District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.Learns and performs installations, maintenance and repairs of the District’s collection systems including repair on wet wells, manholes, and collection lines; learns to install, inspect, and repair wastewater flow metering equipment.Learns to install collection lines and related laterals.Learns to conduct sewer line inspections using a TV camera or smoke test.Excavates trenches to line and grade and performs repairs to pipes, couplings, and fittings.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.

Education: Equivalent to a High School Diploma.

Experience: Depending on assignment, one (1) year of experience working in the plumbing, construction or automotive trades.
