DEFINITION : Under general supervision provides canal safety, water science and water-related education to the youth of the Coachella Valley through presentations and activities performed in a classroom or multi-purpose room; provides teacher training on how to incorporate water and related topics into curriculum; promotes, communicates, and provides understanding of water related issues; and performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS : This journey level classification is responsible for independently developing and providing canal safety, water science and water-related education materials, presentations and activities in a classroom or other informational settings. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Essential Functions

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

• Provides presentations on water safety, canal safety, history, and geological characteristics of the Coachella Valley in classrooms or larger informational settings; prepares and provides give-away promotional materials for students, teachers, and participants.
• Assists in the development of educational curricula regarding water acquisition, distribution, constructive use, and conservation for a variety of grade levels and audiences for presentations, tours, and workshops; assists with the preparation of related informational brochures, displays, audio visual aids, and presentations for a wide variety of age and culturally diverse groups.
• Conducts student and adult tours of District facilities; provides community speaking activities with a wide variety of community groups.
• Works directly with school administrators and instructional staff to promote ongoing relationships and good rapport with the District; assists in the creation of pertinent informational materials for school instructional staff; produces a quarterly teacher newsletter.
• Conducts community speaking activities with a wide variety of community groups; represents the District and Community and HOA functions such as earthquake preparedness events.
• Maintains awareness of educational methodologies and developments in water acquisition, distribution, and conservation.
• Provides support and direction to others preparing and delivering public presentations; prepares and distributes approved materials.
• Assists in the preparations of other public information programs such as fair and mall displays, dedications, groundbreaking, open houses, and other District functions.
• Plans, develops, and implements special projects as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Licenses: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment. Possession of a California Teaching Credential, to be maintained throughout employment.

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in education, teaching, communications, or a related field.
Experience : Five (5) years of successful teaching experience.

Knowledge of:

• Education curriculum development and teaching methodology.
• History, geology, and hydrography of the local area as related to water distribution and usage.
• Principles of public speaking and presentations.
• Public relations and public information principles and practices.
• District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
• Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff.
• The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
• Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

Ability to:

• Develop and present educational programs regarding water acquisition, distribution, constructive use, reclamation, and conversation.
• Organize and present materials utilizing effective public speaking methods.
• Prepare narrative descriptions and reports.
• Understand the organization and operation of the District and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
• Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.
• Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
