The City of Fort Worth's Environmental Services Department is seeking a dedicated and motivated Environmental Specialist to join the Water Quality Team within the Environmental Quality Division. This position supports the City's commitment to protecting public health and the environment by ensuring compliance with municipal, state, and federal environmental regulations. The Environmental Quality Division oversees critical programs designed to maintain water quality standards, safeguard natural resources, and ensure the City meets regulatory requirements.
Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college with major coursework in biology, chemistry, and environmental science.
- Must have completed or have the ability to complete 40 hours HAZWOPER and 24 hours HAZMAT Emergency Response Training.
- Valid Driver's License.
- No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications: - 40 hours HAZWOPER Emergency Response Training preferred;
- Experience with Environmental State and Federal Regulations and Authorizations and Environmental Quality Monitoring functions and criteria;
- Strong Project Planning, Development, and Time Management skills;
- Competence in the use of current office computer applications, including word processing, email, time management, spreadsheets, and presentation software; and
- Understanding of the fundamentals of Environmental Pollutant Abatement.
The Environmental Specialist job responsibilities include: - Performing stormwater environmental compliance inspections and investigations, including collecting data and samples related to various environmental issues.
- Perform MS4 compliance and enforcement of related activities such as illicit discharge investigations (IDDE), spill response, TPDES industrial and construction stormwater inspections, dry weather field screens, wet weather monitoring, rapid bio assessments, and internal audit assessments.
- Writing technical investigation reports and conducting complex calculations and documentation of evidence to complete reports.
- Aiding in education and training efforts.
- Giving administrative support to supervisory-level colleagues.
- Participate in State and Municipal Administrative Hearings and Court proceedings.
- Completing quality assurance on documentation and reports.
- Maintaining and properly employing the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
- Preparing scientific and procedural presentations.
- Communicate violations, deficiencies or noncompliance to customers
- Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting; depending on assignment. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, unsanitary conditions, workspace restrictions, and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor even when dealing with upset customers/citizens.
Physical Demand Medium work - Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
