The Position

The City of Claremont Recreation and Human Services Department is looking for two enthusiastic, energetic, and experienced Program Specialists for the Senior Center team. A Program Specialist for Joslyn Center contract instructor and volunteer support, and a Program Specialist for Blaisdell recreation support.

Program Specialist: Joslyn Center Contract Instructor and Volunteer Support

The Recreation and Human Services Department is looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, public service-oriented individual with excellent communication and customer service skills to coordinate classes, instructors and volunteers for the Claremont Senior Program.

The Program Specialist provides support to the Supervisor and Program Coordinator within the Recreation and Human Services Department’s Senior Program. The Joslyn Center serves as the hub for the Senior Program’s two senior lunch sites (Joslyn Center and Blaisdell Community Center); provides registration and programming support for a wide array of recreational offerings for older adults and assists with resource referral to social services for older adults.

The Program Specialist will assist in managing the day-to-day operations of classes and activity programming at the Joslyn Center, including overseeing the intent to instruct application process and monitoring instructors. They will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks, which may include cash and receipt reconciliation, complex customer service requests, developing and implementing office systems, scheduling meetings, preparing routine correspondence and documents, copying, sorting, filing documents, performing data entry and other related tasks and special projects as assigned.

Hours of work:

The Program Specialist is part-time and requires approximately 25 hours per week of work. This position is not eligible for benefits. Hours of work are generally Monday-Friday, from 1:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Work hours may vary with department needs. Some evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required for special events.

Program Specialist: Blaisdell Recreation Support

The Recreation and Human Services Department is looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, public-service oriented individual with excellent communication and customer service skills to coordinate recreation offerings at the Blaisdell Community Center.

The Program Specialist works with the Recreation and Human Services Department’s Supervisor, Program Coordinator, and program partners to enhance program offerings for Elderly Nutrition Program participants at the Blaisdell Community Center site. They will be responsible for gathering and evaluating participant feedback to develop and facilitate relevant and engaging programming; scheduling and monitoring program providers; planning and executing special events; facility management and development of standard operating procedures for the site; support of resource referral efforts for social services as needed; volunteer management; and performing administrative tasks and special projects within the division as assigned.

Hours of work:

The Program Specialist is part-time and requires approximately 25 hours per week of work. This position is not eligible for benefits. Hours of work are generally Monday-Friday, from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Work hours may vary with department needs. Some evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required for special events.

MANDATORY SPECIAL EVENTS

The mandatory special events all staff are required to work include: Village Venture - in October; Halloween Spooktacular - Saturday before Halloween; Holiday Promenade - First Friday in December; Spring Celebration - Saturday before Easter; 4th of July Celebration - July 4, MondayNight Concert series - Mondays July - August, Movies in the Park series - varying nights in July. In addition, Recreation and Human Services staff may be called upon to work for other special events throughout the year.

Ideal Candidate

Qualified applicants will have a high school diploma (or equivalent), and two years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation, social or human services, or a related field. College coursework in social services, human services, social work or a related field is highly desirable.

A valid California Driver's License, good driving record, and certification in First Aid and CPR are also required. Bilingual skills are highly desirable.
