COMMUNITY PROGRAM TECHNICIAN I (BILINGUAL PARENT ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST)

DESCRIPTIONThe Department of Library, Arts and Culture has an immediate opportunity for an unclassified, full-time Community Program Technician I (Bilingual Parent Engagement Specialist). This is a grant-funded, at-will position of
one year duration ONLY. Under direct supervision of a Senior Librarian, the Bilingual Parent Engagement Specialist designs, implements, and evaluates programs and trainings for parents and their families. The role is located at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library at 5870 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach, CA 90805.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES- Creates program content, activities and agendas for parent education, early literacy, and kindergarten readiness programs;
- Creates early literacy and kindergarten readiness information brochures and recommended reading lists;
- Coordinates with outside agencies, including the LB Health Department and the Long Beach Early Childhood Education Committee (LBECE) to provide parent workshops and presentations;
- Connects families with resources to assist with additional social, economic, and educational needs as necessary;
- Coordinates with LBECE to plan annual Early Learning Festival; and
- Performs other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: - Bilingual English/Spanish;
- High School diploma or equivalent (p roof required)* ;
AND - Two (2) years full-time professional experience providing technical support for the delivery of programs, activities, and services in the area of child development, literacy, and/or public library programs. College education in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis;
- Knowledge of child development;
- Knowledge of principles and techniques of parent education and family involvement;
- Knowledge of community resources and skills to link families with appropriate agencies and services;
- Experience working with parent and community groups;
- Experience working with culturally and socio-economically diverse families and children;
- Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and internet required; and
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills;
- A valid driver's license or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel.

- Ability to keep up with latest trends and updates in software and applications, as well as learn new technologies;
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures;
- Ability to maintain accurate records and files;
- Ability to work effectively with a variety of people by consistently exercising tact, good judgment, and a proactive, problem-solving communication style;
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team;
- Ability to operate office equipment, including computers, printers, and copiers; and,
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, climb, push/pull/lift up to 40 pounds.
