Candidates may qualify at either level listed below:

Solid Waste Maintenance Worker I: A minimum of one year of semi-skilled general maintenance experience is required, including performing minor, repetitive repairs. Preferred experience includes work in solid waste collection, disposal, recycling operations, general labor, maintenance or construction. Familiarity with specific tools and procedures related to these tasks is beneficial (relevant education may be substituted for experience) . A high school diploma or equivalent is required (experience may be substituted for education) . A valid driver’s license and favorable driving record are required . Pay Range: $17.50 to $21.65 depending on qualifications and experience.

Solid Waste Maintenance Worker II: A minimum of three years of semi-skilled to skilled general maintenance experience is required, including performing minor, repetitive repairs. Preferred experience includes work in solid waste collection, disposal, recycling operations, general labor, maintenance or construction. Familiarity with specific tools and procedures related to these tasks is beneficial (relevant education may be substituted for experience) . A high school diploma or equivalent is required (experience may be substituted for education) . A valid Kansas Class B commercial driver's license with air-brake endorsement is required. Pay Range: $19.75 to $26.27 depending on qualifications and experience.

The Solid Waste Maintenance Worker II is a mid-level position performing more complex maintenance tasks while providing support to Operations and Route Supervisors within the Solid Waste Division. Responsibilities include performing repairs of solid waste containers, equipment, and facilities. This role also provides general support to city staff, including interacting with the public regarding assigned programs and services. Employees in this position work independently with minimal supervision. This is the second level in the Solid Waste Maintenance Worker career progression, which includes levels I, II and III.

Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of three years of semi-skilled to skilled general maintenance experience is required, including performing minor, repetitive repairs. Preferred experience includes work in solid waste collection, disposal, recycling operations, general labor, maintenance or construction. Familiarity with specific tools and procedures related to these tasks is beneficial.

Education : A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license with air-brake endorsement and favorable driving record are required.

Environmental or Physical Demands: Regularly lifts and carries bags and debris weighing up to 50lbs, and pushes and pulls trash containers weighing up to 300lbs. Repeatedly bends, twists, pushes, pulls and reaches throughout the workday. Walks long distances and stands for extended periods, often on uneven or rough terrain. Frequently climbs in and out of large collection vehicles onto equipment. Operates and maintains trucks, and other machinery requiring manual dexterity and coordination. Works in varying weather conditions, often exposed to dusty, odors, noise, and traffic. Maintains situational awareness while working around moving equipment and in high-traffic areas. Performs physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
