POSITION OVERVIEW

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES /ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Houston Public Library (HPL) is looking for hands-on and highly engaged managers to bring their passion and creativity to the Central Library. Successful candidates will have strong leadership and communication skills, an ability to inspire staff, a passion for serving communities, and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.

The Librarian III (Manager) will:
• Possess exceptional leadership skills to oversee and manage the activities and daily operations of an area of the Central Library.
• Take initiative to creatively solve problems and possess sound decision-making skills.
• Provide research and reference assistance to library users either in-person, on the phone, or via E-Mail.
• Support circulation services including mail correspondence, Reader’s Advisory, and TexShare accounts.
• Interact with customers at the Customer Service Desk and supervisor roving, assisting with information requests and technology assistance, and library programs.
• Exhibit a high level of creativity for adaptive and innovative services.
• Ensure employees are prepared, motivated, productive, and challenged in their work assignments to ensure maximum performance.
• Establish and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships with community groups, other government agencies, community organizations, other employees,
and the public.
• Required to drive to other library facilities and community organizations for outreach to talk about library services and issue library cards.
• Have a strong working knowledge of Microsoft and Internet software, electronic devices such as e-readers and tablets, and other technologies.
• Make recommendations for improvements in services and collection.
• Must be willing to work alternating Saturdays.
• Interaction requires moderate tact and cooperation, e.g., scheduling and/or coordinating two personal calendars, resolving problems and/or obtaining necessary information.
• Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
• Perform other administrative duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions. Requires the ability to make simple gross motor responses within large tolerances. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires Master of Library Science degree from a school accredited by the American Library Association.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) years of library experience are required, including one year of management experience.

PREFERENCES

• Experience in personnel management and supervision.
• Ability to plan and organize work and skilled at prioritization.
• Knowledge of library operations and organization, including services, activities, staffing, facilities, and equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
• Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
• Experience providing training to colleagues preferred.
• Willing to obtain a valid Texas driver’s license the ability to obtain one within 30 days of selection?
• Knowledge of library trends and current versions of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Sirsi Symphony preferred.
•To better serve our diverse communities, fluency in a foreign language is highly preferred (Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, French).
