The Ideal Candidate - Light Equipment

The ideal candidate should possess a combination of technical skills, certifications, experience, and professional attributes suited to complete a full range of journey level mechanic work by performing preventative maintenance repair and overhaul of gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel, hybrid and electric automobiles, light and medium duty trucks, and related equipment that includes but is not limited to emergency generators, small construction equipment, bituminous machine, trailers, arrow board trailers, message board trailers, gas, diesel, and electric driven carts, landscape trucks, paint sprayer trucks, pressure washer trailers.

Fleet Mechanic I - Light Equipment Class Specification

Definition
Under direction, maintains, repairs, and overhauls light and medium trucks, automobiles, and other mechanical equipment; performs related duties as required.

Class Characteristics

This is a journey level classification in the City's fleet mechanic series reporting to the Fleet Mechanic II. It is characterized by the primary responsibility to work on all automotive vehicles, light and medium duty trucks, and related equipment that includes but is not limited to emergency generators, small construction equipment, bituminous machine, trailers, arrow board trailers, message board trailers, gas, diesel, and electric driven carts, landscape trucks, paint sprayer trucks, pressure washer trailers. Assignments, objectives, and work steps are set and established work processes are to be followed; work review is occasional during progress or upon completion of assignment. It is distinguished from Fleet Mechanic I - Heavy Equipment by the latter's primary responsibility to maintain, repair, and overhaul large, heavy duty vehicles and equipment. The Fleet Mechanic I-Light Equipment is differentiated from the Mechanic Assistant position by the former’s additional primary responsibility to perform major service and repairs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: Principles and operation of internal combustion gasoline, diesel, CNG, and alternative fuel engines and hybrid powertrains; maintenance, repair, and overhaul requirements of light and medium duty trucks, automobiles, small construction equipment and other equipment that includes but is not limited to emergency generators, small construction equipment, bituminous machine, trailers, arrow board trailers, message board trailers, gas, diesel, and electric driven carts, landscape trucks, paint sprayer trucks; the uses of oils, greases and lubricating devices; the methods used to tune-up automotive vehicles; the use of testing equipment such as an electronic engine analyzer, voltmeter, exhaust emission analyzer, and oscilloscope automotive electronic principles and operations; maintenance and repair of hydraulic systems, air systems, cooling systems, automatic and standard transmissions and clutches; reading schematic concepts; preventative maintenance inspection methods; garage safety procedures; the method of operation of a variety of automotive vehicles and equipment; the assembly and operation of auxiliary equipment typically found in vehicles, trucks and construction equipment; the vehicle code pertaining to lighting systems, emission control systems, and brake systems; the operation and use of gas and electric welding equipment; the methods used in metal fabrication; safe work practices and use of required safety equipment.

Skill in: Operating automotive diagnostic equipment; operating and driving gasoline, diesel, CNG, alternative fuel, hybrid and vehicles and equipment; uses equipment repair tools.

Ability to: Maintain, repair, and overhaul a variety of automotive, construction, and other mechanical equipment such as gas, diesel, alternative fuel and hybrid automobiles, light and medium duty trucks, and construction equipment; diagnose and troubleshoot electrical circuits, electronic circuits, fuel systems, emission systems, brakes, differentials, automatic and standard transmissions, clutches, drivelines, air conditioning systems, and hydraulic systems; use electronic diagnostic and repair equipment; remove, repair and replace major and minor engine component parts; overhaul internal combustion gasoline, diesel, CNG, alternative fuel, hybrid and electric powertrains; use shop tools; make vehicle repairs and adjustments; work safely in an automotive shop environment and willing and able to wear safety equipment, some of which may be uncomfortable to wear, and may be used for long periods of time as required; read and interpret repair manuals and automated databases; ability to log work in automated work order tracking systems; develop and maintain cooperative relationships with individuals from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds; determine the best work methods and work sequences when making extensive and complex repairs. Incumbent regularly plans and improves repair procedures such as developing methods of mechanically and physically adapting or altering items to fit and mesh into systems for which the items was not specifically designed.

Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.

Education/Experience

Any combination of education and/or experience, which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to satisfactory job performance, would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: graduation from high school and/or trade school or equivalent and two years progressively responsible journey level experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of light and medium duty trucks, automobiles, and related equipment.

Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class B California Driver’s License as a condition of successful completion of the probationary period. License requirements are subject to changes in State and Federal law, and the City of Fremont must comply with mandated changes at all times. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in Automotive/Light Truck to include: A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A8 Engine Performance and L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist to be obtained by completion of probation is required. Failure to maintain certification will result in disciplinary actions up to and including termination. License requirements are subject to changes in State and Federal law, and the City of Fremont must comply with mandated changes at all times.
