THE POSITION

The Office of Mayor Rex Richardson is recruiting a Communications Deputy (Legislative Assistant) to serve as a vital member of the team, responsible for implementing strategic messaging, media engagement, and public outreach to elevate the visibility and priorities of the Mayor’s Office. The Deputy has the primary responsibility for writing and content development for press releases , speeches, talking points, social media, video storytelling , and other documents. They should have a deep understanding of th e Mayor ’s policy priorities, Long Beach’s diverse communities, and the media landscape.

CITY GOVERNMENT

Long Beach is a full-service Charter City governed by nine City Council m embers who are elected b y district and a Mayor that is elected at large. Elected officials also include the City Attorney, City Auditor, and City Prosecutor. The Council m embers and the Mayor are subject to a three-term limit, which allows them to serve for a maximum of twelve years. The City Council appoints a City Manager and a City Clerk. The City Manager is responsible for the efficient administration of all City departments, excluding those under the direction of a separately elected official, Board, or Commission. The City of Long Beach provides all traditional public services. In addition to its traditional services, the City also maintains one of the world's busiest seaports, which serves as a leading gateway for international trade. Long Beach also has its own full-service commercial airport and is one of only three cities in California with its own Health Department. ABOUT THE MAYOR

Rex Richardson is the 29th Mayor of Long Beach and the city’s first African American mayor, known for his commitment to community empowerment and equitable development. A former City Councilmember and two-time Vice Mayor, Richardson now leads the nation's 44th largest city and serves as Chair of the Los Angeles County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency (LACAHSA). Nationally, he co-chairs Mayors and CEOs for U.S. Housing Investment, advancing bipartisan efforts to expand housing access. His “Opportunity Beach” agenda prioritizes housing and homelessness solutions, alongside economic recovery and public safety. A Harvard and Yale-trained civic leader, Richardson continues to champion policies that give every resident a fair chance to thrive.

This position is an exempt, at-will position. The incumbent will not accrue any civil service tenure or contractual employment rights in such position. The Legislative Aide is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of the Council Office, and may be removed without cause.
