Position Description

The City of Tacoma is seeking a Fire Maintenance Electrician to join ourteam at the Tacoma Fire Department.You will play a crucial role in supporting public safety by installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment in the fire communication system and electrical systems in fire department buildings. The job classification of Fire Maintenance Electrician is classified and represented by Local 483 IBEW.

Key Responsibilities:

• Install, maintain, and repair fire communications circuits, including fire box circuits and emergency warning lines
• Install, terminate, and splice both communication and fiber optic cables, both overhead and underground
• Use test equipment to locate and troubleshoot issues with communication and fiber optic systems
• Install and maintain uninterruptible power supplies in City buildings and the Fire Communication Headquarters
• Perform electrical wiring duties for heaters, motors, lighting, and other devices in city-owned properties
• Operate bucket trucks, power tools, and electrical testing equipment to perform linework and wiring
• Communicate with contractors and City departments regarding fire alarm and related systems

Qualifications

An equivalent combination to: graduation from high school or trade school, supplemented by training in electrical, electronics and mechanical work and one year experience as a journey-level electrician in a field related to fire communications systems. Completion of a six-month certified fiber optic school or six months on the job experience with fiber optics.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Valid Washington Driver’s License at time of application
• Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class B or higher, prior to completion of one year with maintenance thereafter
• Washington State Journey-Level Electrician License (EL-01 or higher) at time of application
• Basic First Aid with CPR certificate
• Flagger’s card and Confined Space Certification prior to completion of one year

Knowledge & Skills

• Knowledge of electrical theory and principles as applied to circuits, wiring systems, and fire alarm systems
• Proficiency in installing, testing, and repairing aerial and underground copper and fiber optic communication cables
• Skilled in the use of tools, materials, and methods commonly used in the electrical trade
• Ability to install, maintain, and repair electronic components such as control boards, switching devices, and dispatch circuits
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and application of proper safety precautions in electrical work
• Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions and maintain accurate records
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively under varying weather conditions and meet deadlines
