The Position

This recruitment is being conducted to fill one (1) part-time vacancy (0.5 FTE) for the classification of Cook I/II, which may be filled at either level depending on the qualifications, for the Juvenile Hall at Napa County. The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill future part-time and extra help vacancies as they occur over the next 12 months.

About the Position & Department:
The Napa County Probation Department operates adult and juvenile court-related services in the areas of investigation and supervision with the mission to enforce court orders to inspire positive change, transform the live of offenders, victims, and families, and promote community safety. The department is also responsible for the overall operation of the County’s Juvenile Hall, which provides custody, counseling, medical care and guidance of delinquent and custodial youth in a variety of short- and medium-term programs. The Cook at the Juvenile Hall will prepare and cook food in large quantities. The Cook I is an entry-level position that works under general supervision, prepares, cooks and serves a variety of food for regular and special diets daily within the facility. The Cook II is a journey-level position that is responsible for the food preparation and serving activities for special programs, coordinating cooking activities, and providing lead supervision over other food service staff.

Supplemental questions will be scored by subject matter experts. The most qualified applicants from the scoring of the supplemental questions will be invited for an Oral Exam (Panel Interview).

Oral Exam (Panel Interview) Tentatively scheduled for the week of September 29, 2025

The most qualified candidates from the oral exam (panel interview) will be placed on the eligibility list and may be considered for current and future positions for up to one year from establishment date.

SALARY -
Salaries are based on a five-step range. Appointments are usually made at the beginning step with advances occurring at six months and the completion of each year thereafter. Salary rates are reviewed annually.
