Plans, directs, and manages the activities of the Animal Services Department, ensuring the safety and welfare of animals in the County’s care and the protection of public health. Provides strategic leadership to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming facility for both animals and visitors, while creating an efficient, professional, and supportive work environment for staff. Oversees compliance with the Animal Control Ordinance and related statutes, policies, and procedures, ensuring they are communicated and enforced with fairness, tact, and impartiality..

This position provides strategic leadership and oversight of all sheltering and animal control functions within Nassau County. This role ensures the highest standards of public safety, animal care, and customer service while advancing innovative, compassionate solutions to community animal issues. Serves as lead in the design and development of a new, modern shelter facility, a forward-thinking environment that prioritizes animal wellbeing, staff efficiency, and community engagement.

Typical Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Management, Public Health, Animal Science, Law Enforcement, or related field, and five (5) years of experience in animal sheltering, three (3) years of which was in a supervisory capacity or any equivalent combination of training, education or work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Extensive relevant experience may substitute for formal education requirements. Must obtain Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) IS-10.A - Animals in Disasters: Awareness and Preparedness, IS-11.A - Animals in Disasters: Community Planning and IS-111.A - Livestock in Disasters certifications within one (1) year of hire. Must possess a valid State Driver’s License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employee must reside or move within forty-five (45) minutes of the Animal Services Facility within one hundred twenty (120) days of employment.

FLORIDA RETIREMENT SYSTEM (FRS) The Florida Retirement System is a retirement plan designed to provide an income to a vested employee and his/her family when the employee retires, becomes partially or totally disabled, or dies prior to retirement. A defined benefit or defined contribution option may be chosen by the employee. Employees are required to contribute 3% of their salary per Florida Statute.

TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM The County may provide tuition assistance to cover the cost of tuition and books to County employees requesting tuition reimbursement for courses at an accredited college or university which are applicable to the employee's field of work and/or are of such nature to directly prepare employees for positions of greater responsibility within the County. Salary:

$93,864.72 - $142,826.76 Annually
