An Environmental Specialist job is available with the City of Fort Worth Environmental Services Department. The BioWatch Monitoring Team performs program critical functions in conjunction with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to aid and assist the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in its implementation and continued operation of The BioWatch Program: "a nationwide, aerosol detection system providing early warning across all levels of government to support public health and emergency management communities to prepare for and respond to biological incidents."
This is a full-time temporary position based on federal grant funding availability. Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college with major coursework in biology, chemistry, and environmental science
- Valid Driver's License
- No experience required
Preferred Qualifications: - Experience with State and Federal Air Quality Monitoring functions and criteria
- Competence in the use of current office computer applications, including word processing, email, time management, spreadsheets, and presentation software
- Understanding of the fundamentals of Air Quality Science and Air Pollutant Emission Monitoring
The Environmental Specialist job responsibilities include: - The proper installation and collection of sample filters within a precise, established schedule.
- Conveyance of sample filters via established protocols.
- Prompt upkeep, maintenance, and repair of sampling monitors and monitoring sites.
- Calibrations, Quality Assurance Audits, and data reporting.
- Computer application support.
- Giving administrative support to supervisory-level colleagues.
- Participating in 24-hour, on-call emergency response services.
- Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting; depending on assignment. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, unsanitary conditions, workspace restrictions, and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor even when dealing with upset customers/citizens.
Physical Demand Medium work - Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
