The Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency
Carpenter vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster.
Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.
During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.
Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Carpenter. DEFINITION :
Performs journey-level carpentry work on new construction, alteration and repair projects.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS :Positions allocable to this class typically report to a Carpenter Working Supervisor or higher level supervisor and are responsible for performing journey-level carpentry work such as rough and finish carpentry on buildings and does milling, woodturning, and pattern work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, specifications or verbal instruction. Positions are also responsible for constructing scaffolding, building forms, layering floors, and erecting framing. These positions require incumbents to exercise a knowledge of common practices, tools, terminology, and accident prevention precautions of the trade and the ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions. These positions require incumbents to carry heavy equipment, tools, and materials, when performing rough and finish carpentry on buildings.
Essential Job Functions- Engages in all types of rough and finish carpentry on buildings.
- Does milling, woodturning and pattern work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, specifications or verbal instructions.
- Constructs scaffolding, builds forms, lays floors, and erects framing.
- Assembles, installs and repairs office and institutional furnishings.
- Makes and fits doors, window sashes and screens.
- Maintains materials tools and equipment.
- Supervises apprentices and helpers as needed.
- Drives automotive equipment to work sites.
Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS : TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE :Completion of a recognized carpenter apprentice training program of at least four years' duration -OR- Five years' experience in carpentry work on buildings, one year of which must have been at the journey-level.
LICENSE : A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS : IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. t includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.
Additional Information EXAMINATION CONTENT : During your initial work period, the appointing department will evaluate your performance. Those who achieve a passing score on this evaluation will be considered for permanent appointment.
