Job Summary Mohave County Public Health-Environmental Health Division is looking to fill an Environmental Health Specialist II position. The Environmental Health Division conducts various inspections to establishments adherence to environmental health rules and regulations as set by the State of Arizona. The Environmental Health Specialist will evaluate for compliance or violations to include, but are not limited to, motels, trailer parks, swimming pools, food retail stores, food service establishments, and kennels.

Environmental Health Technician -> Salary Range 12 Steps 1-18 $20.09 - $33.21/hr.
Environmental Health Specialist I -> Salary Range 15 Steps 1-18 $23.26 - $38.47/hr.
Environmental Health Specialist II -> Salary Range 17 Steps 1-18 $25.65 - $42.41/hr. - Monday - Friday - 8:00am-5:00pm
- Work will be both office and field environments.
- May occasionally be required to work early in the morning or later in the evening.
- Work may be subject to rotating weekends, call-backs due to inspections of temporary events, including a rare possibility of holidays.
- As an advocate for public and environmental health, work will include regular interactions with members of the public, business owners, and other departments and agencies .
- Possible outside exposures when participating in outreach community events.
- Work will include conducting educational sessions at schools, events, and for food service establishments and employees.
- This division serves as a regulatory authority. It is essential to be able to read and interpret a variety of codes and regulations, apply the proper operation, and maintain professional objectivity in all courses of action and communication.
Must be able to travel throughout different county locations. Working conditions would include but not limited to: - Ability to work indoors in facilities with small or confined spaces, excessive noise, and/or noxious odors.
- Travel will be mostly in Mohave County but may be required to another part of the state as needed.
- Travel will be mostly within Mohave County with travel to additional outlying county locations as needed, including Bullhead City, Lake Havasu City, Northern Arizona Strip, and other areas including attending required trainings or meetings, while operating a Mohave County provided vehicle.
- Mohave County will cover room costs and per diem if required overnight stay(s).
- Work does require traveling throughout the county while operating a county vehicle in adverse traffic conditions, weather, terrain, and altitudes.
- The ability to work outdoors performing moderate labor in varying weather conditions, including strong winds, extreme heat to extreme cold temperatures.
- This position may also include the occasional moderate lifting of 25 - 50lbs.
- This position requires an equal amount of time spent standing, walking, running, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and bending.
Essential Job Functions- Inspects, evaluates, and renders decisions of compliance or violation on various types of licensed establishments and related public establishments for adherence to environmental health rules and regulations as set by State of Arizona. Licensed and public establishments include, but are not limited to, motels, trailer parks, public bathing facilities, swimming pools, food retail stores, food service establishments, and pet stores.
- Reviews construction plans and specifications of various types of licensed establishments, public establishments, or properties for compliance to environmental health rules and regulations as set by the State of Arizona.
- Conducts field and office training and instruction sessions to food service establishments to educate owners and managers on proper environmental health practices and procedures. Consults and instructs owners and managers of licensed public establishments or other individuals of the environmental health practices and procedures and the requirements for building, maintaining or correcting a violation of a public or licensed establishment or within any other scope of the environmental health area.
- Investigates, responds, and resolves, citizen's complaints involving potential or possible public health problems.
- Coordinates inspection activities with other County departments and governmental agencies.
- Collects field samples for analysis. Conducts investigations of health and disease concerns that reach epidemic proportions and conducts general environmental health surveys. Investigates and surveys areas of potential insect and rodent infestation. Analyzes information gathered, interprets analysis, and submits recommendations based on findings.
- Secures compliance with pertinent regulations by promotion, education and enforcement of environmental health rules and regulations.
- Prepares reports, maintains records, and issues environmental health related violation or closure notices.
- May be required to develop and deliver a variety of presentations designed to educate the public on the requirements outlined in Proposition 201 - Smoke-Free Arizona Act.
- Communicates and acts in a professional manner with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.
- Create and maintain a supportive work environment with other departments and community programs, Public Health divisions, and Public Health leadership on accreditation domain while maintaining a culture of quality improvement.
- Apply basic principles, practices, techniques, teaching, and communication methods related to the age, gender, race/ethnicity, educational level, and socioeconomic status of community members.
- Communicate and act in a culturally competent and professional manner maintaining cooperative relationships with community members, co-workers, and work contacts.
Minimum Qualifications Required Minimum Education, Experience, and Training: Environmental Health Technician: Entry level experience work including.
- High School Diploma/GED (General Education Degree)
- College level courses in the Basic Sciences (such as, Biology, Chemistry).
- OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications. SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENT:
If desiring advancement to Environmental Health Specialist, willingness to strive toward obtaining registration as a Sanitarian by the State of Arizona.- Completion of five years of employment as an Environmental Health Technician (Sanitarian Aide) in a recognized public agency or in a private industry position directly related to environmental health; OR
- Completion of three (3) years of full-time military duty in the field of environmental health; OR
- Completion of thirty (30) semester hours of credit in the natural sciences at an accredited college or university andone (1) year experience in performing environmental health inspections in the areas of food service and business establishments, wastewater and septic systems, swimming pools, lodging accommodations and trailer parks
- The above qualifications are also required of an individual to be considered for the position of Environmental Health Specialist I, an unregistered Sanitarian. If registration is received, the individual can be considered for the position of Environmental Health Specialist II.
Environmental Health Specialist I: One-year experience work including .
- High School Diploma/GED (General Education Degree)
- Must meet one of the following qualifications:
- Completion of three (3) years of employment as an Environmental Health Technician (Sanitarian Aide) in a recognized public agency or in a private industry position directly related to environmental health.
- Completion of three (3) years of full-time military duty in the field of environmental health.
- Completion of thirty (30) semester hours of credit in the natural sciences at an accredited college or university andone (1) year experience in performing environmental health inspections in the areas of food service and business establishments, wastewater, and septic systems, swimming pools, lodging accommodations and trailer parks.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Basic Sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry, or other related field.
Environmental Health Specialist II: Two-year experience work including .
- High School Diploma/GED (General Education Degree)
- Three (3) years of employment as an Environmental Health Technician in a recognized public agency or in a private industry position directly related to environmental health or completion of Thirty (30) semester hours of credit in natural sciences at an accredited college or university and One (1) year experience in performing environmental health inspections in the areas of food service and business establishments, swimming pools, lodging accommodations and trailer parks or Three (3) years of full-time Military Duty in the field of environmental health.
- Current registration with the State of Arizona as a Sanitarian or valid registration as a Sanitarian with another state. (If registered in another state, must successfully pass the State of Arizona Sanitarian Registration examination, or obtain reciprocity within six months of employment) AND an additional Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience performing environmental health inspections in the areas of food service and business establishments, wastewater, and septic systems, swimming pools, lodging accommodations and trailer parks after registration as a Sanitarian.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.
