This recruitment may close at any time without notice.The Information Technology team at the City of Irvine is seeking a dynamic and experienced Network Engineer to be a member of a high-performing team responsible for supporting the design, implementation, and management of the City’s enterprise network infrastructure. This role will be pivotal in the execution of both day-to-day operations and strategic projects, ensuring performance, reliability, and security of both the wired and wireless networks across multiple facilities. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with routing and switching, firewalls, VPNs, and network monitoring tools. This position requires excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to deliver innovative and dependable network services.
Your Impact- Maintain computer and communications network devices including switches, routers, IoT devices, and other physical hardware.
- Install and configure network equipment.
- Perform regular maintenance and patching on network equipment.
- Pull and terminating network cabling as required.
- Utilize monitoring tools to improve network performance and minimize disruptions and outages.
- Troubleshoot, resolve, and communicate networking issues to stakeholders.
- Document, Implement, and test disaster recovery procedures.
- Follow all change management processes.
- Create or update network diagrams and documentation as changes are made.
- Assist with project management duties as assigned.
- Suggest improvements to network performance, capacity, and scalability.
- Evaluate, plan, implement, and integrate new systems.
- Manage various complex and highly analytical technology projects critical to City or department operations or City services.
- Plan, organize, direct, and control all or part of highly complex information systems projects from concept through design, development, implementation and close out.
- Maintain current knowledge and understanding of security and networking best practices.
- Participate in on-call rotation and respond to critical incidents promptly.

Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor degree in Computer Science or closely related field and four (4) years of general information technology experience performing technical and/or analytical tasks for computer systems or services in any of the functional areas or emerging information technology fields or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Best Fit- Comprehensive understanding of network services and protocols such as TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF and EIGRP etc.
- In-depth understanding and practical knowledge of networking systems and concepts such as WAN, VLAN, WiFi, firewalls, switches, and routers.
- In-depth understanding of copper, fiber and wireless network technologies.
- Ability to implement Layer 1 solutions including the ability to pull network cable/fiber, terminate, patch, test, and maintain.
- Ability to rack and stack network equipment in MDF/IDFs.
- Ability to configure and troubleshoot network switch stacks.
- Ability to analyze and evaluate physical and wireless networks, identify issues and provide solutions to ensure networks are operating efficiently.
- Self-starter with strong time management skills.
- Ability to support several projects simultaneously from design to implementation to operations.
- Ability to communicate technical information to other technical team members.
- Ability to communicate with coworkers and stakeholders who may not have technical knowledge.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Understanding of IP telephony systems and protocols (e.g., SIP, H.323, MS Teams, Call Manager).
- Experience in designing and managing VoIP solutions, including integration with traditional telephony systems and cloud telephony systems.
