Position DescriptionThis position is responsible for providing technical support in all aspects of the histology laboratory. Employees in this position process, embed, cut, stain, and prepare tissue sides for pathologist to review for diagnostic evaluations. May assist Chief Histologic Technician in maintaining daily workflow, monitoring of employees, and training of new employees in the lab. Work is performed under general supervision, according to standard methods and procedures. Non routine situations are referred to supervisor. May instruct other technical personnel in histologic techniques; may monitor daily workflow, and training of new employees in the Histology Laboratory.
Major/Essential Functions- Receive, accesses, log, and track samples, biopsies, and other tissues.
- Ensure documentation, and record retention
- Participate in quality assurance programs, including slide reviews
- Ensure proper fixation and specimen integrity
- Cut unstained, prepare H&E and special stains slides
- Investigate discrepancies, and nonconformities
- Serve as technical lead for the histopathology and guide technical workflows
- Oversee validation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of histology equipment and instrumentation (microtomes, stainers, cryostats, etc.)
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety requirements
- Maintain laboratory safety protocols for handling biohazardous specimens, fixatives, reagents, and waste disposal
- Communicate effectively with a range of team members
- Stay current in advances in pathology and histotechnology
- Prepare billing reports and support the supervisor in additional tasks related to histopathology and core facilities as necessary
- Monitor and enforce laboratory standards, performance metrics, and error rates
- Manage workload effectively to meet turnaround time goals
Required QualificationsHigh School Diploma. Four years of experience, of which 2 years are in histology department having fixation, Microtomy, processing, staining and gross room. Skill in the use of microtomes; embedding centers, and other equipment common to a histology lab; ability to prepare chemical solutions, stains, reagents, etc., knowledge of anatomical structures. Current registry with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Histologic Technician.
