Description

Overview

Oversee all beach rescue operations on gulf beaches and respond to all dispatch calls on the City of Corpus Christi Gulf Beaches ranging from drowning to trauma with injuries. Ensure all full time and seasonal beach rescue staff are trained and physically ready to respond to emergencies. The major objective is to keep beach goers safe through preventative and response actions while on the beach and swimming in the gulf. This position exists for public safety of beach goers.

Responsibilities

• Survey the water and watch over beach goers

• Work off fire dispatch and respond to any medical emergencies on the gulf beaches

• Respond to calls including swimming, drowning, recovery, major medical calls, major trauma, and minor injury

• Lead seasonal staff during the summer beach season

• Assist the program manager or superintendent with interviewing, hiring, orientation, training, scheduling, disciplining, and other supervisory duties that pertain to seasonal employees

• Maintain a level of physical and strength fitness required by USLA

• Stay current with all required training, developing training programs for seasonal staff during the summer months

• Assist with special events by providing water safety, first aid, traffic control, and supplies

• Ensure all beach rescue equipment stays in top working conditions

• Drive jet skis and trucks with lights and sirens

• Ensure all equipment used on beach is cleaned and lubricated to ensure longer lasting life of the equipment

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

• Non-Exempt - Part-Time - TEMP - 12 hours a week

• Must be available to work additional hours as needed

• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED

• Two (2) years of experience with at least one (1) year as an Open Water Lifeguard or one (1) year as a Lifeguard Supervisor or Instructor

Licenses and Certifications

Required

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hiring

• Demonstrate ability to swim 500 meters (550 yards) over a measured course in ten minutes or less

• Demonstrate ability to successfully perform an open water rescue

• Demonstrate ability to perform rigorous physical duties of an open water lifeguard through test of stamina and strength

Required within six (6) months of hire

• CPR/First Aid/AED certification

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
