SALARY INFORMATION:

Grade I - $ 28.92 - $39.24 Hourly

Grade II - $ 32.33 - $43.95 Hourly

Equipment Mechanic II is distinguished from Grade Level I by having lead supervision over a crew of two or more subordinates or has attained a high-level of proficiency and versatility sufficient to warrant a merit increase in accordance with established guidelines.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under general supervision, performs journey-level work in the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive, construction, and other gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel-powered equipment; inspects and tests equipment to locate and determine the extent of necessary repairs and the corrective action required; repairs, overhauls and replaces engines, transmissions, and differentials; rebuilds and replaces defective parts; tunes engines using electronic engine analyzers; replaces and adjusts fuel, electrical and cooling systems or system component parts; overhauls mechanical, hydraulic, booster, air brake and vacuum systems; installs and repairs accessories; may perform various welding operations; may diagnose, overhaul, and repair various hydraulic systems; observes safety rules and regulations; may repair diesel marine or gas engines and outboard motors; enters service data into computer work order software and performs other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

Applicants must meet Option A OR Option B:

Option A.: Three (3) years of paid, full-time equivalent experience in gas or diesel equipment repair, which must include at least two (2) years as a journey-level equipment mechanic, with the ability to do mid-major work on automotive and heavy-duty equipment.

OR

Option B: Completion of two (2) years or equivalent of formal training or education in automotive or heavy equipment repair from an accredited vocational or community college program i.e., an apprenticeship or graduation from a vocational or community college program in an automotive, diesel, or related field. A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on an analysis of exam results. This is a continuous eligible list, which means eligible lists may be established periodically and may expire six months from their effective date. Applicants may apply only once during a four-month period. Candidates meeting the minimum qualification with applications received by February 13, 2026 will be invited with Test #01 candidates to the occupational written examination.

Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.

In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans who successfully qualify on any or all open competitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score. Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score. (A copy of the veteran's DD-214, Member 4 form indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application at the time of filing.)
