Under the direction of the Animal Control Supervisor, this position provides for the constant cleanliness of cages, runs, and shelter areas as well as the proper feeding and care of all animals in the shelter.

- Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in city and department attendance policies and procedures. Perform the care of animals that have been impounded and quarantined, as well as the disposal of animals. The responsibilities will vary based on the current needs of the shelter.
- Wash and dry towels and blankets; wash and sterilize water and food bowls.
- Perform general cleaning and disinfecting, and empty trash receptacles as often as is necessary.
- Patrol, clean, and maintain grounds around the shelter and office daily; pick up trash and fecal matter.
- Provide care for animals in the shelter, including feeding, cleaning, disinfecting, and monitoring behavior for general physical condition as well as obvious signs of illness, disease, and discontent. Clean and sanitize cages, runs, floors, and related areas.
- Walk dogs several times a day to provide exercise and time for elimination of bowels and bladder.
- Perform the cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs of all equipment and tools used to perform job assignments, ensuring they are kept in good working condition. Notify management of major repairs or new equipment needs. Keep equipment and tools properly stored.
- Coordinate animal selection and transport for media and/or public events.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications- Possess a valid driver's license.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- One (1) year of experience in animal care, animal control, or related fields.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications:Six (6) months’ experience working with animals.
Special Requirements:- Texas DSHS Animal Control Officer Certification
- Texas DSHS Euthanasia Certification.
Work Schedule:- Schedule varies Sunday-Saturday, any time between 7 am and 6 pm.
- 40-hour work week, 10 hours per day (days and times to be determined at a later date)
- On call duty as needed.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:- Field, office, and shelter environments; exposure to weather.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
- Ability to manage and handle animals.
- Heavy and repetitive shelter work required.

Basic group life insurance protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of two times the annual salary as recorded at the beginning of each year.

Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS)
All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System. TMRS is a qualified tax deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the city provides 2-to-1 matching contributions.

Salary:
$34,646.23 - $41,995.43 Annually
